LAWRENCE, Kan. ?
The Kansas Jayhawks got a strong outing from pitcher Valerie George to win game one, 2-0, then came from behind for a 3-2 victory in game two on their way to a doubleheader sweep of Bradley, Tuesday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.
In game one, Kansas (23-6) second baseman Sara Ramirez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie, providing all the offense the Jayhawks would need in the 2-0 win.
George allowed a double to junior Miriam Wegmann (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville H.S.) to begin the game followed by a two-out walk to Jacqueline Vitale (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons Township H.S.), but retired 19 batters in a row to end the game and record a one-hit shutout. She struck out eight on her way to her 11th victory of the season.
BU starting pitcher Ashley Birdsong (Otis, Ore./Taft H.S.) took the loss for the Braves, allowing only three hits over six innings. She struck out five and walked one in falling to 6-3 on the season.
The Braves (8-6) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two on an RBI single from Wegmann. Freshman catcher Denise Jilka (Eureka, Mo./Eureka H.S.) started the inning with a double to left-center. Freshman Jess Boeger (St. Louis, Mo./Afton H.S.) pinch ran for Jilka and scored on the hit from Wegmann.
Kansas tied the game in the fourth inning at 1-1, plating an unearned run off Bradley freshman starter Katie Dennis (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.). The Jayhawks began the inning with a base hit from Val Chapple, who later moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Chapple advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ally Stanton. The Jayhawks took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run single from Stevie Crisosto.
Junior Alycia Bachkora (Overland Park, Kan./Notre Dame de Sion H.S.) hit a one-out double to center to spark a seventh inning rally for the Braves. Senior Trish Kowalewski (Yorkville, Ill./Downers Grove North H.S.) drove Bachkora home with a single to trim the deficit to 3-2, but George came on in relief to get a pair of strikeouts to end the game with the tying run at first base.
Dennis struck out five Jayhawks over five innings before yielding to senior Rebecca Bishop (Carmichael, Calif./Del Campo H.S.), who pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
With the doubleheader sweep, Kansas has beaten Bradley three times this season, including a 10-2 victory at the Coach B Classic in Carbondale earlier this month. The Braves will face another Big 12 opponent Wednesday, visiting Missouri for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Columbia against the Tigers.
