Bradley junior Katie Nowak (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake H.S.) won her first event of the outdoor season and third overall this year, winning the 1500 meter run at the second day of competition at the Gill Spring Classic hosted by Southern Illinois, Saturday afternoon.
Nowak ran the race in a time of 4:38.95, edging Holly Nearman of Wisconsin-Milwaukee by less than two seconds for the win. Sophomore teammate Marlana Haefelin (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich H.S.) joined Nowak in the top ten of the race, finishing tenth in a time of 4:59.96.
In field events, sophomore Erika Sepich (Canton, Ill./Canton H.S.) registered her second top-five finish of the meet, earning third place in the javelin with a throw of 36.62 meters. Senior Kim Martin (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.) finished sixth in the shot put, one day after turning in a fifth place finish in the hammer throw. Martin recorded a throw of 12.09 meters. Junior Trish Martens (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central H.S.) was seventh in the triple jump at 10.67 meters.
Junior Shelby Lile (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City H.S.) had another top six finish for BU, placing sixth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:47.44. Martens ran in the 100 meters for the first time this season, finishing 11th in 14.10 seconds, while teammate Jessica Holloway (Paris, Ill./Paris H.S.) was on her heels in 13th place in 14.14 seconds.
The Braves scored 33 points as a team for a fifth place finish. They'll return to outdoor competition Friday at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
