DAVENPORT, Iowa --
The Bradley men's golf team ended its season on a high note, shooting a season-best 295 in the final round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tuesday at the par-71 Davenport Country Club. The third-round 295 was the third best round of the day, but not enough to move the Braves up in the standings as they finished in ninth place in the field.
Four of five players carded rounds in the 70's, marking the first time this spring for Bradley. The Braves, which carded the team's lowest round since shooting 291 on Sept. 25, 2006 at the Butler Fall Invitational, opened Tuesday's action 20 shots out of eighth place but finished 19 shots out of a tie for sixth place and were 23 shots behind four-place finisher Drake.
Sophomore Zach Wanken had a strong finish to the season, firing a one-under par 70 to lead Bradley in the third round. Wanken, who led the team with a 77.6 stroke average on the year and 20 rounds in the 70's, finished in a tie for 25th at 227. Freshman Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) was the Braves top performer after day one and finished two shots behind Wanken in a tie for 30th place at 229 after shooting a 74 Tuesday. Thompson finished the year with a 78.0 stroke average and was second on the squad with 19 rounds in the 70's.
Senior Nick Roth (Rochester, Ill./Rochester/Illinois Central) shot a final-round 77 and tied for 32nd overall at 230, while freshman Nathan Perry (Normal, Ill./Normal West) matched a season-best with a 74 Tuesday to move into 41st place at 235. Senior Tommie Ackerman (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian/Illinois Central) rounded out the scoring with a final round 81 and finished 45th at 250.
Wichita State shot an even-par 284 Tuesday to run away with the team title. The Shockers boasted the top two individual performers in the field and three of the top five individuals as they helped WSU to a two-under par 850 for the tournament. Southern Illinois was second at 874, while Illinois State finished third at 884.
Drake edged out Evansville for fourth place at 898, with the Purple Aces following just one shot back in fifth at 899. Missouri State and Northern Iowa tied for sixth at 902 and Creighton was just two shots behind in eighth place at 904. Only Wichita State (284), Southern Illinois (293) and Illinois State (285) turned in better final rounds than Bradley's 295 during the final day of play, but the Braves were ninth overall in the team standings at 921.
