PEORIA, Ill. -- The Bradley women's tennis team combined for a 4-3 record in singles play during the first day of action at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Tennis Invitational Friday at the Clubs at River City North. Orginially scheduled to be played on campus at the Markin Tennis Courts, inclement weather forced the teams to move indoors for day one of the three day event.
The Braves picked up two victories in both Flights of singles play. Sophomore Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West) earned one of Bradley's two wins in Flight A singles, downing Wisconsin-Green Bay's Kally Stadum 6-2, 6-1. Miller will face Hayley Homburg of Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Also advancing in Flight A singles was freshman Veronika Wojakowska (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer). She defeated Emily Rogers of Northern Illinois, 6-2, 6-3 and will face Amanda Dibbs of Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon.
In Flight B singles, Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral) pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Stephanie Okuma of Northern Illinois and will play Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Ashley Schoneman tomorrow. Junior Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) will play Jenna Felsher of Wisconsin-Milwaukee during Saturday's action after topping Eastern Illinois' Shannon Brooks, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Emily Regenold posted a 6-2 victory in her Flight A matchup with Sammi Schoen of Wisconsin-Milwaukee but fell 7-5, 10-4 in the final two sets and will face Cara Huck of Eastern Illinois. In Flight B singles, Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Megan Gow was a 7-5, 6-1 winner against senior Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview). Krubeck will play Laura Bartingale Saturday afternoon and fellow senior Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) also fell in the Flight B draw, losing 6-1, 6-2 to Wisconsin-Green Bay's Morgan Wueve. Braun will play Karlee Miller of Wisconsin-Milwaukee during Saturday's play.
Action at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Tennis Invitational continues Saturday morning, beginning with doubles play at 9 a.m.
