Thompson Cards 69, Braves In 15th After Day One

LEMONT, Ill. -- Sophomore Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) shot a career-best 69 to highlight day one for the Bradley men's golf team at the John Dallio Memorial Sunday at the par-72 Ruffled Feathers Golf Course. The Braves finished the opening day of play in 15th place, four shots back of a tie for 13th.

Thompson fired an opening round 77 and followed it up with a second-round 69 to finish the day tied for 20th at 146. His 69 is the best round by a Bradley player since junior Zach Wanken (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) shot a 68 on Oct. 7, 2007 and is tied for the 16th best round in school history.

Wanken turned in the low score of the first round for the Braves with a 71. He shot an 80 in the afternoon to finish the day five shots behind Thompson in a tie for 48th place at 151. Freshman Earl Gerlach (Normal, Ill./Normal West) shot a 79 in his first collegiate round and is tied for 73rd at 157 after turning in a 78 in Sunday's second round.

Sophomore Nathan Perry (Normal, Ill./Normal West) is two shots behind Gerlach in 81st at 159 after opening day scores of 81 and 78. Freshman Chris Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) finds himself in 87th place heading into Monday's final round after scores of 85 and 87 during Sunday's play.

Big East Conference member Georgetown is first in the team standings at 575 and holds a two-shot edge on second-place Southern Illinois (577). Drake and Nova Southeastern are in a tie for third place, just three shots behind Georgetown at 578. Tournament-host DePaul and Northern Iowa are tied for fifth after 36 holes of play at 586, while Detoit is in seventh place 590.

Dayton sits in eighth place at 591 and is four shots ahead of ninth-place Seton Hall (595). Youngstown State will open Tuesday's action in 10th at 579 and is followed by Loyola at 600. Wright State is 12th in the team standings and holds a three-shot edge on both Eastern Illinois and Evansville, which are tied for 13th at 609. Bradley rounds out the tournament field in 15th at 613, after rounds of 308 and 305.

The Braves close out play at the John Dallio Memorial Tuesday with one round of play.
