CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Bradley women's tennis team encountered some tough competition at day one of the Queen City Invitational Friday. The Braves went winless in opening-round singles and doubles matches.
In Flight "A" singles, junior Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) dropped her first match to Toledo's Maha Guirguis 6-1, 6-2. In her consolation quarterfinal, Miller withdrew with an injury, giving West Virginia's Emily Mathis the victory. Senior Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton H.S.) lost her Flight "A" opener to Katie Haught from West Virginia 7-5, 6-2. Cincinnati's Lindsey Lonergan then beat Regenold in the consolation quarterfinals 6-1, 6-1.
Seniors Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral H.S.) also went 0-4 in Flight "B" singles action. Buterbaugh played Xavier's Kaitlynn Zinn to a 6-1, 6-3 loss in her first match. Ball State's Hayley Hall handled Buterbaugh in the consolation quarterfinal 6-3, 6-2.
In her Flight "C" opener, freshman Kennedy Scott (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) took the first set from Dayton's Molly Mathews 6-2, but Mathews rebounded to win the match 6-4, 6-4. An illness forced Scott to retire her consolation quarterfinal to Cincinnati's Ksenia Slynko.
Freshman Brigitte Graf (Double Oak, Texas/Faustina Academy) lost to Annica Darud of Ball State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, in her Flight "D" singles opener. After earning a bye in the consolation quarterfinal, Graf will face Dayton's Sara Smith in consolation semifinal action Saturday.
In Friday's Flight "A" doubles matches, Miller/Regenold battled Cincinnati's Ismail/Wise to a 9-8 loss, while Buterbaugh/Donohue were swept 8-0 by Chiricosta/Eccleston of Bowling Green. Both Miller/Regenold and Buterbaugh/Donohue will play in doubles consolation action Saturday.
