ST. LOUIS - Bradley soccer players Grant Campbell and Bobby Smith earned honorable mention status on the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team following a league-wide vote of the soccer sports information directors announced by the conference office this afternoon.
A senior midfielder from Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield H.S.), Campbell becomes a three-time honorable mention Valley Scholar-Athlete. Voted a second-team all-conference midfielder by The Valley coaches last week, Campbell boasts a 3.26 cumulative grade point average while majoring in administration of criminal justice. On the field, he finished fifth in school history by starting 77 career games in a variety of roles and he tied for third on the team in scoring in 2009 with two goals and six total points.
A sophomore defensive midfielder from Springfield, Ill. (Sacred Heart-Griffin H.S.), Smith sports a 3.90 cumulative GPA as an accounting major. He played in all 18 games for the Braves this season, recording an assist Sept. 6 against Mercer, and he has started 33 of Bradley's 38 games the last two years.
The criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete recognition honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or played in the league tournament. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
