ORLANDO, Fla. -- Bradley had just three hits through the first six innings against George Mason, but a seventh inning homer off the bat of Jacqueline Vitale (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons Township) forced extra innings and senior Alycia Bachkora (Overland Park, Kan./Notre Dame de Sion) drove home the winning run in the eighth, as the Braves rallied to top the Patriots 2-1 in eight innings to conclude play at the Central Florida Early Bird Invitational Sunday morning. Bradley (6-3 overall) won its third consecutive game and finished tournament play with a 3-2 record.
George Mason (1-4 overall) had runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the third inning when Alyssa See drove in the first run of the contest with a single through the right side of the infield to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
Vitale got the Braves on the scoreboard, leading off the top of the seventh inning with a solo homer to left center to help send the game to extra innings.
Using the international tie-break rule, senior Anne Creighton (Glide, Ore./Glide) was placed on second base to start the eighth inning. She moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winning run on an Alycia Bachkora (Overland Park, Kan./Notre Dame de Sion) two-out single to left field to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. Freshman Jackie Roth (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) followed with a single to advance Bachkora to third base, but Bradley was unable to push an insurance run across.
Freshman hurler Katie Dennis (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite) gave way to senior Ashley Birdsong (Otis, Ore./Taft) to start the bottom of the eighth inning. Pinch hitter Kate Bustin fouled out and Birdsong struck out Meghan Hill and Rachael Davies to close out the Bradley win and pick up her first save of the season. Dennis scattered five hits and struck out three in the win as she improved to 3-1 on the season.
Bradley returns to action Friday, Feb. 27 at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The Braves open tournament play with an 11:15 a.m. contest against South Dakota State.
