PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior softball player Janay Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) has been named the Bradley Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced Wednesday, after helping the Braves to a 3-2 record at last week's Central Florida Early Bird Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
Mitchell hit .455 (5-for-11) and boasted a .500 on base percentage in the five games last week. She opened the week with a 2-for-3 performance against South Carolina and was 1-for-3 in the Braves 5-3 victory against Western Carolina. Mitchell was 1-for-2 at the plate in Bradley's 2-0 victory against 25th-ranked Kansas and reached base twice (one hit and one hit by pitch) in a 2-1 eight-inning win against George Mason. An international business major, Mitchell owns a 3.45 cumulative grade point average.
Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.
Mitchell and the Braves return to action Friday, Feb. 27 when they face South Dakota State at 11:15 a.m. in Fayetteville, Ark., to open play at the Razorback Invitational.
