OMAHA, Neb.
-- The Bradley doubles pairing of junior
Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton H.S.) and sophomore
Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) won for the 12th consecutive time together this spring, but Creighton recovered to win the remaining doubles matches and five of six singles matches to hand the Braves a 6-1 dual loss in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for the Braves.
Regenold and Miller beat Tess Reddin and Nicole Nakaoka 8-4 at No. 1, giving the Braves (8-5 overall, 0-1 MVC) a 13-0 record from the top spot in the doubles lineup this season. The win improves Miller to 17-7 overall in doubles matches during the 2008-09 season, the second-most doubles wins in a single-season in Bradley history. Ashley Morris and Elise Montrose share the single-season BU record for doubles wins, posting 20 in 2005-06.
Despite Bradley's early doubles victory, the Bluejays (9-3 overall,1-1 MVC) netted two of three doubles wins for an early lead on their way to their seventh consecutive dual win. Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader provided an 8-4 victory for the Bluejays at No. 2 over BU juniors Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral H.S.) and Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy). Kelsey Schmidt and and Lauren Mastro locked up the doubles point for the hosts with an 8-1 win over the Bradley senior doubles pairing of Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.). Saturday's decision marked just the second time in 13 dual matches this season the Braves have not won the doubles point for an early lead.
Bradley freshman Veronika Wojakowska (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer H.S.) notched a singles win from the No. 2 spot in the lineup for the only point of the match for the Braves, beating Mastro in three sets by a final of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The win improves Wojakowska, the only freshman on the BU roster, to 15-8 overall and 10-2 during the spring dual season. Wojakowska's 15 singles victories leads the Braves and is already tied for fifth-most all-time in a single season at Bradley. Teri Chan owns the single-season BU record for singles victory with 19 set on three different occasions (2005-07).
Reddin netted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Miller at the top spot to maintain momentum for the Bluejays, while Nakaoka posted a straight sets win over Regenold at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3. Schmidt didn't drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Buterbaught at No. 4. In the final two singles matches, the Braves forced a third set but came up short. Mary Pat McMullan recorded a singles win at No. 5, beating Krubeck 5-7, 7-6, 10-6, while Sarah Cadwallader beat Braun at No. 6 by a 4-6, 7-6, 11-9 score.
The defeat concludes Bradley's season-long six-match road trip with a 3-3 record. The Braves will return home to host Illinois State on Friday, March 27 at 1 p.m.
