PEORIA, Ill. ? Playing at home for the first time since February 28, the Bradley women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State at the Clubs at River City Friday afternoon.
The visiting Redbirds (9-6 overall, 1-0 MVC) won each of the six singles matches in straight sets, starting with a 7-6, 6-1 win from Julia Zubkova at the top singles spot of the lineup over BU sophomore Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.). At No. 2, ISU's Franziska Steinhardt notched a 6-0, 6-3 win over freshman Veronika Wojakowska (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer H.S.).
Natalia Lech didn't drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over BU junior Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton H.S.) at No. 3, while Tanja Hrovatic won by an identical 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 4 over Bradley junior Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral H.S.). Illinois State's Hannah Esker picked up a win at No. 5 over Bradley senior Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) by a score of 6-0, 6-4. Carmen Peters notched the sixth ISU singles win from the No. 6 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Bradley senior Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School).
In doubles play, the Bradley (8-6 overall, 0-2 MVC) pairing of Regenold and Miller fell at No. 1 doubles to Steinhardt and Zubkova, 8-6, the first loss for the BU duo this spring. Hrovatic and Lech followed with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Buterbaugh and BU junior Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), while Esker and Peters finished the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory over Braun and Krubeck at No. 3.
The loss for Bradley is their first defeat at home this season, dropping the Braves to 4-1 in matches played at the Clubs at River City. The Braves will resume play with a 2 p.m. league match against Indiana State on Saturday at the Clubs at River City.
