URBANA, Ill. -- Junior Amanda Clack (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) extended her season-long hit streak to eight consecutive games with a second-inning double, but Bradley managed just two hits off Illinois starter Monica Perry as the Illini posted a 4-0 victory against the Braves Thursday at Eichelberger Field. Bradley fell to 15-17 on the season with the loss.
Clack, who finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate, collected Bradley's first hit of the contest with a one-out double in the top of the second inning. The double was Clack's team-leading ninth of the year. Junior Lauren Meister (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was hit by a pitch with two outs to put runners at first and second. The Braves came up empty, however, as Perry induced a groundout to end the inning.
A pair of Bradley errors in the bottom of the second inning nearly led to an Illinois (22-10 overall) run, but the Braves turned a double play to get out of the jam.
The Illini scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Danielle Zymkowitz drew a one-out walk and stole second base. She came around to score on a Hope Howell double to left center to give Illinois a 1-0 lead.
Zymkowitz got things started for the Illini again in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out single and Howell followed with a single to left field. Hollie Pinchback drove in both base runners with a double to left field to push the Illini advantage to 3-0.
Illinois added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Kelley Wedel had a one-out double and moved to third base on a pinch-hit single by Bailey Behrens with a single. Pinch runner Ashley Conrad stole second and the Illini pushed a run across on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jamie Adishian.
After giving up the second-inning double to Clack, Perry retired the Braves in order in three of the final four innings and improved to 17-8 on the season with a complete-game two-hit shutout. Perry struck out nine and walked none.
Sophomore Katie Dennis (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite) suffered the loss for Bradley, falling to 3-7 on the season. Dennis gave up one hit and one run in two and one-third innings of work. Clack pitched two and one-third innings in relief and surrendered three hits and two runs. Senior Ashley Birdsong (Otis, Ore./Taft) tossed the final one and one-third innings and gave up two hits and one run, while striking out two batters.
Bradley returns to action Friday when the Braves open a three-game series at Evansville with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
