PEORIA, Ill.
? The Drake women's tennis team recorded a doubles sweep and followed with six singles victories in straight sets to blank Bradley 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Clubs at River City in Peoria.
The visitors jumped to an early lead with three doubles wins, starting with an 8-4 victory at the top spot for Veronika Leszayova and Morgan Rainey over the BU duo of junior Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton H.S.) and sophomore Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.). Drake's Jessica Aguilera and Jessica Labarte followed suit with an 8-1 win at No. 2 over junior Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman Veronika Wojakowska (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer), while Gabriela Demos and Kari Sloboth notched the third Drake doubles win with an 8-3 victory over Bradley seniors Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.).
Drake continued the momentum in singles play, starting with a 6-0, 6-2 win for Leszayova over Miller at No. 1. Demos stopped Wojakowska at No. 2 by a 6-2, 6-4 score, while Labarte beat Regenold at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3. Aguilera knocked off Donohue at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2 and Sloboth defeated Bradley junior Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral H.S.) at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2. Krubeck pushed Drake's Amanda Aragon to the limit in the first set at No. 6, but Aragon won the set and the match 7-5, 6-3 for the Drake singles sweep.
The Braves will finish the home portion of the 2008-09 schedule on Sunday with an 11 a.m. match against the Northern Iowa, the final home match in the four-year careers of Bradley seniors Kim Braun and Erin Krubeck.
