MACOMB, Ill. -- Sophomore Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) posted the first top 10 individual finish for the Bradley men's golf team in nearly two years as he helped the Braves to a fifth place finish among NCAA Division I teams at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational at the par-72 Harry Mussatto Golf Course.
Originally scheduled for a 54-hole event, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes after windy conditions made the course unplayable Tuesday afternoon. Thompson, who shot a 74 in Monday's first round, followed up with a 79 to tie for eighth place at 153. The top 10 finish was the first for a Brave since Ryan Saurs at the 2007 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
Junior Zach Wanken (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) carded the best second-round score for the Braves with a two-over par 74 to finish two shots behind Thompson in a tie for 19th place at 155. The freshmen duo of Earl Gerlach (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and Chris Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) both shot 80's Monday and finished up the second round with identical 80's again to tie for 41st place at 160.
Sophomore Nathan Perry (Normal, Ill./Normal West) fired his lowest round of the spring with a final round 77 to move into a tie for 46th place, one shot behind Gerlach and Niemiec at 161.
South Dakota State matched its first round 300, with a second-round 300 to claim the team title with a 24-over par 600. Tournament-host Western Illinois was second in the team standings at 606, while Wisconsin-Green Bay was third among NCAA Division I teams at 619. Creighton followed with a two-round total of 624 to edge the Braves by one shot (315-310=625). Bradley was one shot better than SIU Edwardsville (626), while IUPUI was seventh among Division I teams at 633. Western Illinois Gold finished at 638 after shooting 320 in the second round.
The Braves return to action April 27-28 at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship at the Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
