PEORIA, Ill. - Freshman women's basketball player Katie Yohn (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) is one of seven individuals from across the state of Illinois to earn the 2009 Do What's Right! Sportsperson of the Year award announced last week by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).

The award is designed to honor outstanding sportsmanship during interscholastic competition.  Applicants were judged by a committee of IHSA staff members based on letters of recommendation highlighting their leadership skills and sportsmanship, participation in sports and activities, academic performance, application essays and overall involvement in their school and community.

"I believe this award epitomizes what Katie is all about," Bradley head coach Paula Buscher said.  "She is a fierce competitor, yet understands the importance of doing things the right way.  She is a leader on and off the court and is a great addition to our program."

St. Edward's all-time leading scorer with 1,814 points, Yohn averaged 23.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 4.3 assists and 2.7 blocked shots per game as a senior and was a unanimous Class 2A All-State selection.  She participated in the Class 2A Three-Point Shooting contest and was named the Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year in addition to taking home MVP honors of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game.  Yohn was the starting setter on the volleyball team and helped the Lady Wave to a third-place state finish in Class 2A as a senior.
