SANTEE, Calif. - The Bradley men's golf team is in fifth place after 36 holes of the Carlton Oaks Invitational at the par-72 Carlton Oaks Country Club. Junior Nathan Perry (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and senior Zach Wanken (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) were the Braves top performers on day one as they finished the day tied for 19th at 165.
Perry and Wanken shot identical opening rounds of 83 and followed with afternoon scores of 82 to end the day tied for 19th at 165. The duo is 19 shots back of individual leader Luke Joy of Drake, who carded a two-over par 146 during Monday's action.
Junior Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) turned in rounds of 82 and 86 and enters Tuesday's final round three shots behind Wanken and Perry in a tie for 25th place at 168. Senior Zach Zobrist (Morton, Ill./Peoria Christian) shot the low round of the day for Bradley and matched a season-best with a first round 78. Zobrist shot a 91 in the afternoon and is alone in 27th place at 169.
Freshman Corey Verseman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) made his collegiate debut and settled down after an opening round 91 to shoot 82 in the second round. He rounds out the scoring for Bradley in 29th place at 173.
Tournament-host Drake sits atop the leaderboard after 36 holes with a score of 616 (303-313). Loyola (Md.) is eight shots back in second place at 624, while Point Loma Nazarene is third in the standings at 627. Cal State-San Marcos is 13 shots ahead of Bradley in fourth place at 645 with the Braves following in fifth at 658. Bradley holds a one shot lead on sixth-place North Dakota State, which shot 659 Monday.
The Braves close out action at the Carlton Oaks Invitational Tuesday with one round of play.
