PEORIA, Ill. -- A young Bradley men's golf team will open its fall schedule Saturday and Sunday at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. The Braves 2010-11 roster features three returning letterwinners in addition to four freshmen.
Bradley head coach Jeff Roche and his team will have experience near the top of the lineup, however, as senior Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) returns after leading BU with a 77.2 stroke average. A two-time First-Team MVC Scholar-Athlete and 2009-10 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection, Thompson is tied for 17th in school history with 61 career rounds in the 70's and his 77.6 career stroke average is tied for 19th all-time at BU.
Roche will also lean on senior Nathan Perry (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and sophomore Corey Verseman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) to provide leadership for his young squad.
Freshman Travis Kreiter (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield), the 2008 Peoria Journal Star Golfer of the Year and 2008 Class 1A state champion, is one of four freshmen on the Bradley roster this fall. Fellow freshman Kyle Gunther (Dunlap, Ill./Peoria Christian) was second at the 2009 Class 1A IHSA Championship.
Also joining the squad are freshmen Andrew Weisenborn (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) and Daniel Young (Metamora, Ill./Metamora). Young finished 20th at the 2009 Class 2A IHSA state championship, while Weisenborn tied for 35th at last year's Class 1A IHSA state championship.
