ST. LOUIS - A day after being named Bradley University's Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week, junior goalkeeper Kyle Orne (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista H.S.) has been named the male recipient of the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office Wednesday morning.
Orne started the first and third games during Bradley's season-opening East Coast road swing last week, picking up both victories for the Braves (2-0-1) between the pipes. He boasted a .909 save percentage for the week, making five saves in each of his two appearances. During Wednesday's 2-1 win at Saint Peter's, Orne saved a potential game-tying penalty kick in the 89th minute then posted his second career shutout on his 21st birthday in Sunday's 1-0 victory at Delaware. Currently pursuing a triple major in political science, English and Spanish, Orne owns a 3.83 cumulative grade point average.
Now in its 12th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
"Our partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes," said MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin, who is in his 23rd year with The Valley. "Our student-athletes are the league's best representatives, and we're happy to recognize Kyle for his athletic and academic achievements."
The Bradley Soccer team will return to action at 5 p.m. Friday when the Braves take on East Tennessee State (1-1-0) in the opening game of the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic at Evansville. Bradley also will challenge Alabama A&M (0-2-0) in tournament action Sunday afternoon, before opening its 2010 home season by hosting Dartmouth, SMU and Creighton Sept. 17 and 19 in the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic.
