Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Sophomore Catie O'Leary (Janesville, Wis./Parker/Wisconsin) scored 12 points in the second half and junior Katie Yohn (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) helped key a 15-4 second-half Bradley run with seven points, a block and a steal as the Braves spoiled Butler's home opener with a 71-63 victory Wednesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Bradley (5-3 overall) picked up its fifth consecutive road victory dating back to last season and improved to 3-0 in true road games on the year with the win. Yohn, who battled foul trouble throughout the night, played the final 13:20 of the game with four fouls while contributing to the decisive spurt and O'Leary scored a team-high 15 points to pace three Bradley players in double figures.
The Braves led by as many as nine points in the first half (27-18), before Butler (1-5 overall) made back-to-back three-pointers to end the period and trimmed Bradley's advantage to 29-26 at the half.
Butler used an 8-0 spurt early after the break to take 43-38 lead with 13:40 left to play. Yohn was 3-for-3 from three-point range on the evening and answered with her second trey of the game, but picked up her fourth foul of the game on the next Bulldog possession.
The Butler lead stood at five (48-43) when senior Leah Kassing (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) started Bradley's run with a pair of free throws following a Shronda Butts (Des Moines, Iowa/East) steal.
Senior Hanna Muegge (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) cut the Butler lead to one (48-47) with two free throws at 10:43 left and Yohn followed a Bulldog layup with her third three-pointer of the game to tie things up at 50-50 midway through the second half.
Devin Brierly, who made 10-of-11 free throws attempts in the game, made a pair at the line to put Butler back in front 52-50 nearing the nine-minute mark. Senior MacKenzie Westcott (Williamsburg, Iowa/Williamsburg) hit a jumper to tie it up for the sixth time on the night at 52-52 and a Muegge jumper after a Butler miss gave the Braves a 54-52 lead.
Bradley had a four point cushion (56-52) after a Yohn steal near midcourt and breakaway layup and the Braves capped the run with a Westcott steal and Yohn layup to hold a 58-52 edge nearing the six-minute mark.
Butler made one last push, cutting the Braves' advantage to three points (62-59) with 3:11 to play and trailed 65-61 with 1:44 remaining before Bradley locked up the win. O'Leary had a driving layup with 47 seconds left and later made a pair of free throws to make it a three-possession game (69-61) as Bradley eventually closed out the 71-63 win.
O'Leary scored 12 of her team-high 15 points in the second half and helped the Braves shoot 66.7 percent from the floor in the second period. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in 29 minutes off the bench as Bradley improved to 3-0 on the road for the first time since 2001-02.
Yohn collected 13 points, one assist, two blocks and two steals in 24 minutes despite the foul trouble, while Kassing turned in her second double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Westcott played the final five minutes of the game with four fouls and added eight points and 12 boards in the victory.
The Braves held Butler to 32.8 percent shooting and outrebounded the Bulldogs 45-28. Brierly led Butler with 18 points, six assists and four steals, with Sarah Hamm joining her in double figures with 12 points.
Bradley continues a three-game road swing Saturday with a 1 p.m. (CST) contest at Central Michigan. The game will be broadcast in the Peoria area on 1290 AM (WIRL) with coverage starting at 12:40 p.m. (CST).
