ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Sophomore guard Kelsey Budd (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) picked up one more honor after her career-best effort helped Bradley to a 96-88 victory against Iowa last Saturday, earning Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors announced by the league office.
Budd, who earned Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week and Bradley Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors earlier this week, highlighted BU's first win against Iowa and first home win against a Big Ten Conference opponent since Dec. 3, 1999 with a career-high 31 points off the bench. In addition, she also matched a career-best with four steals and hauled down a career-high six boards to help highlight the victory.
She made 12-of-14 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, as she turned in the most points by a Bradley reserve since Shelli Braud scored 32 points off the bench at Missouri State on Feb. 18, 1988. A sports communication major, Budd owns a 3.55 cumulative grade point average.
Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Budd and the Braves (9-3 overall) return to action Thursday, opening Missouri Valley Conference play against preseason league favorite Missouri State with a 7 p.m. game at Renaissance Coliseum.
