PEORIA, Ill. - The Bradley women's tennis team opened a season-long, three-match homestand with a 6-1 loss to Western Michigan at the David Markin Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon. Freshman Meredith McDonagh (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) earned BU's only point, picking up a victory at #4 singles.
Western Michigan (7-8 overall) swept the doubles matches to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Senior Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West) and freshman Adele Henke (Edina, Minn./Edina) highlighted doubles action, dropping an 8-4 decision at #1 doubles to the Broncos' duo of Nini Sujashvili and Maria Nivia.
In singles play, McDonagh picked up the win at #4 singles after Nivia retired in the first set. Miller also helped highlight singles play, falling 6-0, 6-4 at #1 singles to Sujashvili. Freshman Sarah Rodefeld (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback at #2 singles and Henke fell at #3 singles 6-1, 6-1 to Jill Pastunink in the loss which dropped Bradley's record to 2-12 on the year.
The Braves open Missouri Valley Conference play Friday with a 5 p.m. home match against Illinois State, before closing out the three-match homestand Saturday at 1 p.m. against Western Illinois.
