MACOMB, Ill. - Freshman Travis Kreiter (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) shot even par-72 Monday in the opening round of play at the 39th annual Beu/Mussatto Invitational and the Bradley men's golf team was ninth in the team standings after the first round. Monday's second round was suspended due to darkness and the teams will resume play Tuesday morning.
The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, Kreiter continued his strong play by carding his sixth consecutive sub-80 round to open play at the par-72 Harry Mussatto Golf Course. He entered the second round tied for third in the individual standings, six shots behind individual leader Gino Parrodi of Eastern Illinois; who shot a 66.
Freshman Daniel Young (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) matched his lowest round of the spring with a four-over 76 to open play and was tied for 17th after 18 holes.
Senior Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) is tied for 41st after shooting 79 in the first round and the duo of freshman Kyle Gunther (Dunlap, Ill./Peoria Christian) and sophomore Corey Verseman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) rounded out the team scoring at 83 as the duo was tied for 65th entering the second round.
Tournament-host Western Illinois shot 294 in the first round and leads the field by five shots. South Dakota State was second in the standings at 299, while IPFW and North Dakota State were tied for third at 302. Eastern Illinois was two back in fifth at 304 entering the second round and Wisconsin-Green Bay followed in sixth at 305.
Oakland trailed by one shot in seventh (306) and St. Ambrose closed the opening round in eighth at 309. Bradley shot 310 to close the first round in ninth and the Braves held a six-shot edge on 10th place Monmouth. Western Illinois Gold and South Dakota were tied for 11th at 319 with the pair of Truman State and St. Francis tied for 13th at 320. Illinois Central College finished the first round in 15th (334) and Chicago State rounded out the field in 16th (355).
The Braves will finish up Monday's suspended second round in the morning with the third and final round of the tournament scheduled to immediately follow.
