EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIU Edwardsville (9-4-0) scored twice in the game's first 10 minutes and rode the early momentum to a 4-1 Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer victory against Bradley (7-4-2) Wednesday night at Korte Stadium.
The result evened both teams' Valley record at 1-1-0 and halted Bradley's three-game overall winning streak and three-game MVC road winning streak. It also prevented Bradley moving to .500 overall for the first time in the program's 26-year history.
Aaron Lantz scored a pair of goals for the Cougars, including what proved to be the game-winning strike in the 10th minute to give the hosts an early 2-0 advantage. Kevin Stoll opened the scoring with a tough-angle goal, his third of the season, at 6:32 and Lantz followed with his second of the year on a 35-yard blast at 9:51.
Though outshot 10-2 in the first half, the Braves pulled within 2-1 shortly before halftime when junior forward Wojciech Wojcik finished off a cross from sweeper Tapiwa Machingauta at 41:41.
The Cougars did not let the goal swing the momentum, however, and kept the pressure on in the second half. Lantz struck again in the 59th minute before Christian Volesky punched in his league-leading sixth goal of the year in the 85th minute to ice the game.
After splitting a pair of road games to start the league season, Bradley will return home Saturday to host Valley rival Evansville in the annual Homecoming game. The 6:30 p.m. against the Purple Aces at Shea Stadium will be followed by a fireworks show, capping the weekend's Homecoming festivities.
