ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Junior guard Walt Lemon, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Julian) and sophomore guard Shronda Butts (Des Moines, Iowa/East) have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office Thursday morning.
A psychology major with a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, Lemon collected 14 points, four assists and five steals in Bradley's 72-68 home victory against George Washington last week. He helped the Braves collect 17 steals on 23 George Washington turnovers for the team's highest steal total since tallying 20 takeaways Dec. 14, 2008 versus Southeast Missouri State. A 2012 First-Team MVC Scholar-Athlete selection, Lemon was 6-for-14 from the field and made both of his free throw attempts in the victory.
Named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday, Butts scored 28 of her career-best 34 points after halftime at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and also matched a career-best with five assists in the highest-scoring game in Missouri Valley Conference history. Her 34 points were the most by a Bradley player since Shelli Braud had 34 against Illinois State on Feb. 24, 1988 and tied for the third-most points in a game in school history. A sports communication major, Butts owns a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
The Bradley men's basketball team opens the 2012 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic Monday, hosting Georgia Southern (7 p.m.) at Carver Arena. The women's basketball team returns to Renaissance Coliseum Tuesday, facing Illinois-Chicago in a 6 p.m. contest.
