MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Freshman Kyela Specht (Munster, Ind./Munster) won the mile and fellow freshman Taylor Johnson (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) won the 800 meters to help highlight the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panther Tune-Up for the Bradley track and field team Friday.
Specht ran the fastest mile on the squad this season to pace nine Bradley runners in the field and win the race with a time of 5:02.25 to edge sophomore Cassie Lohmeier (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) by less than 25 one-hundredths of a second.
Specht's time was 11 seconds faster than the team's previous season-best effort and is seventh among Bradley's career best marks. Lohmeier's career-best time (5:02.48) is eighth among school marks and freshman Sarah McMahon (Colfax, Wis./Colfax) cracked the top with the ninth fastest career-best mile time at 5:02.74.
In addition to the trio's performances, four other Bradley runners also turned in career-best mile times during Friday's action.
Not to be outdone, Johnson won the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:18.81. Johnson's time is the third fastest on the squad this year and ranks ninth among BU career best times.
Johnson and Specht also teamed with sophomores Emily Wolbers (Moline, Ill./Moline) and Whitney Schumacher (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) to win the 4x400 meter relay. The group posted the fastest time of the season for BU, crossing the line at 4:12.70.
Freshman Jennifer Wiley (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) placed third in the 60-meter dash and was also Bradley's top finisher (ninth) in the 200 meters. Senior Lyndsey Cleghorn (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) took fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.53 meters.
Bradley returns to action Feb. 25 & 26 at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
