PEORIA, Ill. - The women's tennis team hosted Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois (16-4, 5-1 MVC) Sunday at the David Markin Tennis Courts and the Braves (4-18, 0-7 MVC) dropped a 7-0 decision to the league runner-up in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Braves faced an uphill climb all day; SIU swept the doubles matches and never gave up momentum. Cold winds and overcast skies remained throughout the match but did nothing to cool-off the Salukis who entered the day having won three of their last four contests.
The Braves #3 pairing of sophomores Meredith McDonagh and Ashley Roth delivered the closest match in doubles competition. After a back-and-forth set, their freshman counterparts, Ariadna and Bisela Cairo Baza, finished the Saluki sweep 8-6.
Freshman Carly Miles provided the Braves with their best chance for a singles victory. Miles lost a first-set tiebreaker against Bisela Cairo Baza. During the second game of set two, Miles and Cairo Baza had a score dispute and coaches were called over to settle how many games into the set the players were. A coin-flip landed in Miles favor, but Cairo Baza rallied en route to a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory.
With no more regular-season matches on the schedule, the Braves will travel next week to Omaha, Neb. for the State Farm MVC Championship, which begins Friday.
