WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Bradley men's golf team opened its fall schedule with a seventh-place finish at the Midwest Shootout Sunday. Junior Kyle Gunther (Dunlap, Ill./Peoria Christian) tied for sixth in the field as an individual, while sophomore Seth Trolia (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour) tied for 16th to lead the Braves.
Bradley turned in rounds of 323 and 322 in the two-round tournament held at the par-72 Kampen Golf Course in the squad's first outing of the season to finish nine shots behind sixth-place Loyola-Chicago. Valparaiso won the team title with a 36-hole score of 598.
Gunther joined Trolia in the top 20, tying for sixth for his second career top-10 finish. Gunther carded a pair of 75's to finish 12 shots back of individual medalist Brandon Cauldwell (138) of Southern Illinois at 150.
Trolia finished three shots behind Gunther at 153 after rounds of 77 and 76 to tie for 16th overall. Junior Andrew Weisenborn (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) tied for 36th at 161 with rounds of 80 and 81, while sophomore Danny Masrin (Palatine, Ill./Jakarta International School) carded a pair of 82's to finish three shots behind Weisenborn in a tie for 45th at 164.
Junior Daniel Young (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) tied for 48th at 168, shooting 84 in both rounds and senior Corey Verseman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) tied for 50th (170) with rounds of 87 and 83 to round out the scoring for BU.
Loyola won the team title by two strokes with a total of 598 to edge tournament-host Purdue (600). Eastern Kentucky was third at 603 with Southern Illinois placing fourth (608). Illinois Wesleyan rounded out the top five at 619 and Loyola-Chicago took sixth (636). Bradley was nine shots back in seventh at 645, one shot ahead of eighth-place Eastern Illinois (646). Chicago State rounded out the field in ninth at 869.
Bradley returns to action Saturday and Sunday at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate in Normal, Ill.
