SAN JOSE, Calif. – Steven Sanchez scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season, leading San Jose State (3-3-0) to a 3-2 non-conference men's soccer victory versus Bradley (4-3-2) Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
After Sanchez scored in the 15th minute for the only scoring of the first half, the teams combined for four goals in the second half.
Junior forward Scott Davis scored his first goal of the season in the 48th minute to pull the Braves even. Senior defender Matt Kuehl and junior forward Chris Olivera each contributed to the goal for their first points of the season.
San Jose State had the immediate answer, however, breaking out to a 2-goal advantage after Sanchez scored his second of the game in the 53rd minute and Thomas Barnes followed with his first goal of the year in the 58th minute.
Bradley closed to within 3-2 when junior midfielder Keegan Balle converted his fourth penalty kick goal in the last five games in the 74th minute. The Braves managed only two more shots the rest of the game, however.
Bradley outshot its host, 12-11, and the Braves allowed only four shots on goal in the game, but the Spartans beat keeper Brian Billings on three of those four shots. The three goals allowed were the most surrendered by Bradley in a regular-season game since a 3-2, overtime loss at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Oct. 9, 2010.
The Braves completed a 5-game stretch away from home with a 2-2-1 record, losing the final two games of the road swing. Bradley will return to Shea Stadium for a 2-game home stand, beginning Sept. 29 against Northern Kentucky and continuing Oct. 3 against nationally-ranked Northwestern.
