PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior runner Sarah McMahon (Colfax, Wis./Colfax) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced by the league office Wednesday, in addition to garnering the Bradley Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week award for the second time in the last three weeks after her record-breaking performance Friday at the Bradley Pink Classic.
McMahon was the top collegiate finisher and took second overall at the Bradley Pink Classic last week at Newman Golf Course as she broke the school record in the women's 6K. She clocked a 20:54 to finish nine seconds back of unattached runner Samantha Walkow, who won the individual title at 20:45, as she helped the Bradley women's cross country team to a second-place finish. McMahon's time of 20:54 broke the previous school 6K record of 21:09 which was set by Tam Hart in Normal, Ill., on Nov. 16, 2002 and is the best 6K effort in the MVC this season. An English major, McMahon owns a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.
The Bradley cross country teams will send individuals to Friday's Illinois Open in Champaign, Ill., before next week's Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, Nov. 2.
