Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. -- Indiana scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning and roughed up Bradley pitching for 12 hits on the afternoon as the Hoosiers topped the Braves 15-7 Saturday to wrap up the third day of play for BU at the Kajikawa Classic.
Bradley (2-2 overall) collected a season-high 10 hits, with junior Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon/Lake Land C.C.) helping lead the way offensively. One of three BU players with a multi-hit game, Basham was 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBI.
A total of 15 runs were scored in the first inning, with Indiana (1-1 overall) scoring 11 of the 15 runs in the top of the first. The Hoosiers opened the contest with a triple, home run and another triple all before Jenna Abraham capped the 11-run inning with a grand slam later in the frame.
The Braves answered with four runs in bottom half of the inning, pushing runs across on an illegal pitch and a wild pitch before Basham hit a two-run homer to center to cut the Indiana lead to 11-4.
"Our pitchers struggled to find a rhythm against an Indiana team that came out swinging today," said Bradley head coach Amy Hayes. "However our hitters showed good fight and put up seven runs. (Bailiegh) Basham, (Alyson) Clemente, (Marina) Groenewegen & (Mariah) Cole all had good output to help keep us in the hunt."
After both squads were retired in order in the second, Indiana scored three more runs in the top of the third on a pair of sacrifice flies and a RBI double.
Basham had a double in the bottom of the third and scored on a double by sophomore Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) and Clemente came around to score on a single off the bat of freshman Kendall Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy), as Bradley trimmed the Indiana lead to 14-6 heading to the fourth.
A Bradley error in the fourth helped the Hoosiers push the lead to 15-6 and the Braves left a runner at third in bottom half of the inning.
The Braves loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but managed just one run as Indiana closed out the 15-7 win. Junior Mariah Cole (Springfield, Ill./Chatham Glenwood) drove in Clemente from third with a one-out single for the final score of game as IU's Brooke Boetjer retired the next two batters she faced to close out the win.
Bradley closes out play at the Kajikawa Classic Sunday with a noon game against tournament host and fourth-ranked Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
