Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Brianne Joseph was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, while sophomore Alyson Clemente and Brittany Burgess both extended their hitting streaks to six games to help Bradley rally for a 14-7 victory against Butler at the Tiger Invitational Sunday afternoon.
The Braves completed a perfect 4-0 weekend, erasing a 5-1 deficit to top Butler 14-7 and extend their win streak to five games. The five-game win streak is the longest for Bradley since the 2009 season and improved BU to 8-6 on the year.
Joseph helped Bradley jump out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning after leading off the inning with a double. She moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on another wild pitch as the Braves took the first lead of the game.
Butler (1-7 overall) pounded out six hits in the bottom of the fourth and scored five runs to go in front 5-1, but Bradley answered with four runs in the top of the fifth to pull even at 5-5.
Burgess got things started in the Bradley half of the fifth with a one-out single and Joseph followed with a triple. Burgess later scored on a wild pitch and junior Bailiegh Basham drove in Joseph from third with a single to left. The Braves tied things up at 5-5 when two more runs scored on a Butler error.
The Bulldogs went back in front (6-5) with a run in the bottom half of the fifth, but two unearned Bradley runs in the top of the sixth gave the Braves a 7-6 lead. Freshman Kendall Duffy reached on an error to lead off the inning and Burgess followed a Shannon King walk with a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third. Sophomore Lexi Cremeens delivered a two-out, pinch-hit double to right field to drive in both base runners and put Bradley ahead.
Butler scratched together another run in the bottom of the sixth to once again pull even at 7-7, before Bradley put the game out of reach with a seven-run seventh inning, en route to the 14-7 victory. The Braves had the bases loaded with one out for Joseph who ripped a two-run single to center field. Clemente pushed her team-leading RBI total to 16 with a two-run single to right and junior Marina Groenwegen made it a 12-7 Bradley lead with a bases loaded single. Freshman Kathryn Spenn drove in another run with a sacrifice fly and Basham scored on a Butler error on the play to push the Braves advantage to 14-7.
"It was a total team effort today," said Bradley head coach Amy Hayes. "It's great when your bench can come in and have an impact and they were there for us today. (Rachel) Huggins and (Kathryn) Spenn were able to get their first career hits. In the second game, (Lexi) Cremeens and Spenn had huge at bats off the bench which were key for our win. Camp relieved Maddie (Lynch-Crumrine) and got stronger every inning. Bri Joseph has been steady for us as a leadoff, but she broke out today. (Alyson) Clemente continued her strong hitting, but it was up and down the lineup this weekend. Everyone contributed."
Senior pitcher Mackenzie Camp retired Butler in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the victory. She struck out six and walked one in 3.2 innings of work out of the bullpen to earn the victory. Camp is now 3-2 on the year.
Bradley won the 2013 Tiger Invitational, posting a perfect 4-0 record. Clemete, who hit .714 for the weekend, was named tournament MVP after driving in nine runs and scoring nine runs. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Burgess, Camp and Joseph.
Bradley returns to action Friday, opening play at the Colorado State Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo., with a 10 a.m. game against Nebraska-Omaha.
