Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. -- Junior Madeline Lynch-Crumrine held 13th-ranked Arizona to five hits and just one run, while fellow junior Brianne Joseph drove in the tying run and scored the game-winner to help Bradley to a 2-1 victory against the Wildcats Friday during the second day of play at the Kajikawa Classic.
The victory was Bradley's first against a ranked team since the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament and the Wildcats were the highest ranked opponent the Braves have beat since topping then fifth-ranked Northwestern on March 1, 2008.
"We proved tonight that if you stick to the plan and don't give up on your team you give yourself an opportunity to win," said Bradley head coach Amy Hayes. "Arizona is a proven championship program. They threw a lot at us today and our kids rose to every challenge. I'm so proud of our team. Maddie (Lynch-Crumrine) was unbelievable. She threw a great game. Her ball was moving and she trusted her stuff. Alex Chandler was stellar at short and the combination of Brianne Joseph and Shannon (King) coming through at the plate."
Lynch-Crumrine struck out five and walked two in the complete game victory as the Wildcats stranded the tying run on third after a leadoff double to open the top of the seventh. Bradley managed just three hits off Arizona pitchers with two of the three hits coming in the two-run fifth inning.
Arizona (1-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a one-out RBI single off the bat of Hallie Wilson, before Lynch-Crumrine settled down to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The Braves answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bradley (1-1 overall) had a runner at second with two outs after a leadoff walk and a fielder's choice when Joseph tied the game with a run-scoring single to center to plate Brittany Burgess. Joseph stole second and came around to score the go-ahead run on a single by sophomore Shannon King.
Bradley threatened to break the game open in the bottom of the sixth, but had a runner thrown out at the plate and left the bases loaded as the Braves took a 2-1 lead into the seventh.
Arizona had a runner at third with two outs in the top of the seventh when Lynch-Crumrine got Wilson to ground out to end the game.
Bradley continues play at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday with a pair of games, facing Portland State at 10:30 a.m. and Indiana at 3 p.m.
