Box Score 2 PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) went 4-for-5 and hit a walk-off two-run home run in the ninth inning to help Bradley rally for a 5-3 victory in the series opener against Indiana State, while senior Mackenzie Camp (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone) followed it with a three-hit, complete game shutout in a 2-0 BU win in the night cap as the Braves swept a doubleheader from the Sycamores Friday afternoon at Laura Bradley Park.
Saturday's series finale has been moved up to a 10 a.m. start due to the threat of inclement weather in the Peoria area tomorrow afternoon.
Bradley (18-12 overall, 3-1 MVC) is 3-1 to open Missouri Valley Conference play for the first time since 2000 and the Braves improved to 9-3 in their last 12 games with Friday's victories.
In the opener, Bradley had to rally from a 3-1 deficit to force extra innings and Chandler delivered the big hit of the day with a two-run, walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Braves to a 5-3 extra-inning victory. Freshman Rachel Huggins (Mt. Zion, Ill./Mt. Zion) gave BU an early 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning and Bradley threatened to break the game open after loading the bases with no outs later in the inning.
Indiana State (11-19 overall, 2-6 MVC) threw out a pair of Bradley runners at the plate on fielder's choices, however, and Sycamore hurler Ashli Scott retired the next batter to get out of the jam without any more damage.
Junior Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley) scattered three hits over the first five innings, before Indiana State managed to push a pair of runs across in the top of the sixth to go in front 2-1. Alex Lucas ripped a pinch hit, two-out double to left to drive in a pair of runs and the Sycamores had a 3-1 lead after Morgan Allee belted a one-out homer in the top of the seventh.
Chandler would get the only Bradley hit in the bottom of the seventh and the Braves capitalized on two Indiana State errors in the frame to pull even at 3-3. After a walk and hit by pitch, Chandler drove in a run with a single to right and junior Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon/Lake Land C.C.) later tied the game when she scored on an Indiana State error.
Lynch-Crumrine pitched around a leadoff walk to open the eighth and a two-out single in the ninth, before Chandler's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Basham led off the inning with an infield single and Chandler ripped her second home run of the year to give Bradley the 5-3 win. Lynch-Crumrine improved to 10-6 on the year with the win, striking out one and giving up nine hits and three earned runs in the complete game nine-inning effort.
Bradley scored a run without a hit in the bottom of the first in the second game and added a run in the fourth as Camp and the Braves cruised to a 2-0 win in the nightcap. She struck out four and walked none in the three-hit shutout as she improved her season record to 8-5.
A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for BU in the bottom of the first and junior Brianne Joseph (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls) scored the only run Bradley and Camp would need on a wild pitch.
Camp pitched around a pair of Indiana State hits in the top of the second and Lynch-Crumrine threw out the potential game-tying run at the plate from right field to end the Sycamore half of the third after a BU error and Indiana State hit in the inning. Following the play at the plate, Camp retired the next 12 batters she faced in order to earn her first complete game shutout of the year.
Bradley added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. The Braves had runners at second and third with two outs after opening the frame with back-to-back singles and Joseph beat out an infield single to drive in freshman Kendally Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) to put BU in front 2-0.
Chandler was 4-for-7 with a run and three RBI in the doubleheader, while Basham finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored as the pair combined for seven of Bradley's 13 hits on the day.
Bradley and Indiana State will close out the three-game series with a single game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Laura Bradley Park.
