OCEAN CITY, N.J. – Bradley senior goalkeeper Brian Billings posted a shutout between the pipes and former Brave Tapiwa Machingauta anchored the Ocean City backline, lifting the Nor'easters to a 1-0 upset of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the second round of the 100th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night at Carey Stadium.
A member of the amateur Premier Development League, Ocean City used its fifth-ever win against a pro division squad (Pittsburgh plays in the USL Pro league) to earn a third-round match against Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union next Tuesday (May 28) at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Ocean City will be trying to advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round for the first time in club history.
Though a box score from Tuesday night's Ocean City-Pittsburgh match remains elusive, both Billings and Machingauta are reported to have played the entire 90 minutes. The Ocean City roster also includes Bradley senior Scott Davis. According to the game recap story, Ocean City's Ken Tribbett netted the game-winner in the 68th minute.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a national tournament open to all soccer clubs affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation, both amateur and professional. The Premier Development League (PDL) is the top amateur men's soccer division in North America with 62 teams competing in nine regional divisions across the continent.
In addition to its first two wins in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Ocean City earned a 2-1 road win Saturday against the Jersey City Spartans to open its PDL schedule.
