CHICAGO – Bradley freshman Ashley Thai will play for the White Flight championship in her first college tournament and junior Cassia Wojtalik will try to finish off a flight title of her own during the final day of competition at Chicago State Cougars Invitational Sunday at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club.
Thai advanced to the championship match with a pair of straight-sets wins Saturday. Thai downed Chicago's Sruthi Ramaswami 6-2, 6-2 and followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Northern Illinois' Maria Rozo. Wojtalik actually began her Grey Flight championship match Saturday, but play was suspended with Wojtalik leading 5-2 in the first set against Lewis' Kendra Mills. Wojtalik earned a 6-4, 6-3 win against Northern Illinois' Ilse Pacheco in the quarterfinals, then breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Chicago State's Sabrine Navarro in the semis.
Senior Sarah Rodefeld advanced to the White Flight semifinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win against Chicago's Kelsey McGillis, but dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Northern Illinois' Arantza dela Torre to prevent an all Bradley final Sunday. Rodefeld will face Rozo in a third-place match Sunday.
Also in the Grey Flight, Ashley Roth played her way into the consolation bracket final with a 6-4, 6-1 win against South Dakota's Marina Arriola.
In the singles Black Flight, Carly Miles received a quarterfinals bye Saturday and will play South Dakota's Michelle Elkin Sunday in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Elizabeth Przystawski also received a quarterfinals bye, but fell in her consolation semifinal to Chicago State's Faith Huckabee.
In doubles Green Flight, Thai and Adele Henke dropped their semifinal match, but took third in the draw when their opponents from Chicago withdrew due to injury. That Chicago tandem, Kelsey McGillis/Helen Sdvizhkov outlasted the Bradley duo of Carly Miles and Rodefeld, 8-7, in the quarterfinals before withdrawing. After dropping their quarterfinal match, the Bradley combo of Ariel Dechter and Przystawski knocked off teammates Miles and Rodefeld, 8-4, then won the back draw championship with an 8-3 decision against Chicago State's Carynne Lloyd/Kirsa Utech.
In doubles White Flight, the Bradley duo of Roth/Wojtalik lost both their Sunday matches to finish fourth. Monique Graf and Meredith McDonagh will play in the back draw final Sunday.
