Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake connected on a school-record 17 three-pointers and used a 16-4 run early in the second half to take control of what was a four-point game as Bradley completed a three-game Missouri Valley Conference road swing with a 97-77 loss to the Bulldogs Sunday.
Bradley (4-14 overall, 1-6 MVC) got off to a good start shooting 52 percent from the field in the first half and the Braves built an 18-12 lead less than eight minutes into the contest with sophomore Fantasia Vine (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) scoring eight of her team-high 20 points in the opening minutes.
Drake (8-11 overall, 2-6 MVC) used a three-point barrage in the first half, making 10-of-17 three-pointers in the opening period. The Bulldogs made five of their school record 17 three's during a five and a half minute stretch to fuel a 21-4 spurt which put Drake ahead 33-22 with 6:43 to play in the first half
The Braves ended half strong, however, trimming the Drake advantage to 50-44 at the break. Bradley scored the first hoop of the second half to pull within four (50-46), before Drake countered with a 16-4 spurt. Lizzy Wendell highlighted the Bulldog run with six points, one assist and one steal.
After Bradley ended the Drake spurt with a pair of free throws, Drake's Carly Grenfell knocked down back-to-back trey's and the Bulldogs made four three-pointers during a five-minute stretch to push the lead to 80-56 with 7:20 to play. Drake shot 57 percent from the field and made 17-of-32 (53 percent) of its attempts from beyond the arc as the Bulldogs cruised to the 97-77 victory.
Vine was 8-for-15 from the field and finished with a team-high 20 points. Senior Kelly Frings (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and added 17 points, while fellow senior Kelsey Budd (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) made six of eight free throws. Budd, who moved into a tie with Shelli Braud for 10th in career assists (290 assists), finished with 12 points and four assists. Catie O'Leary (Janesville, Wis./Parker/Wisconsin) was also in double figures with 12 points.
Wendell was one of four Drake players to make at least three triples in the game and finished the contest with a career-best 29 points to go with her five assists and five steals. Kyndal Clark was 5-for-9 from beyond the arc and added 17 points. Caitlin Ingle finished with 16 points and 10 assists, while making 4-of-6 treys and Grenfell added 11 points off the bench.
Drake's 17 three-pointers were the most by a Missouri Valley Conference team since the 2007-08 season and tied for the second-best single-game total in league history.
The game wrapped up a stretch in which Bradley played 10 of 14 games away from home. The Braves host pre-season league favorite Indiana State Friday (7 p.m.) at Renaissance Coliseum.
