INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Bradley men's golf team opened the Butler Fall Invitational with the fourth lowest round in program history and the Braves finished the day fourth in the team standings Monday at the par-70 Highland Country Club.
Junior Lyle Burns (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour/Parkland C.C.) was one of two Braves to fire a one-under 69 in the day's opening round and is tied for fifth after 36 holes at 144 to lead Bradley, which is fourth overall at 585.
Burns matched senior Seth Trolia (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour) with a one-under 69 to open play as the duo helped Bradley shoot the fourth lowest round in school history (283). The Braves, which shot a school record 279 in the opening round of last year's event, led after the first round, but slipped to fourth in the team standings with a 302 in the afternoon.
The opening round 69 was Burns' second round of the year under 70 as he closed Monday's action five shots behind individual leader Jose Pablo Segurola, who is at one-under 139, after a second-round 75.
Senior Danny Masrin (Palatine, Ill./Jakarta International School) extended his streak of consecutive sub-80 rounds to 24 with scores of 72 and 74 to end the day two behind Burns in a tie for 12th at 146. Trolia followed up his first-round 69 with a 78 (147) and heads into the third round one shot back of Masrin in a tie for 15th.
Sophomore Bobby Jacobs (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) turned in a pair of 75's and is tied for 24th (150), while junior Garrett Cox (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour) shot a season-best 73 in the day's first round. A second-round 81 put Cox in 35th in the field at 154.
The freshmen duo of Daniel Lensing (Spring Park, Minn./Orono) and Matthew Specht (Munster, Ind./Munster) are in the field as individuals and are tied with Trolia for 15th (147) after strong efforts. Lensing matched a season-best with a 71 to open play, ending the day with a second-round 76. Specht fired rounds of 73 and 74 in his first collegiate rounds.
IUPUI was two shots behind Bradley after the first round and used a second-round 289 to take over the top spot in the team standings at 574. Evansville is second at 577 and IUPUI's second squad is third overall 584. The Braves follow in fourth at 585, with Indianapolis (5th – 587), Butler (6th – 590) and Parkland (7th – 617) rounding out the field, respectively.
The final round of the Butler Fall Invitational is slated to tee off Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) in the last round of the Fall schedule for Bradley.
