ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Bradley women's basketball team swept Missouri Valley Conference weekly honors with senior Michelle Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) named MVC Player of the Week and freshman Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany/Max-Weber-Schule) taking home Valley Newcomer of the Week honors announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Young received MVC Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career and is the first Brave to earn the award twice in her time on The Hilltop since Monica Rogers won in back-to-back weeks in 2008-09. Schlueter is the first Bradley player to near Valley Newcomer of the Week since the 2011-12 campaign.
The pair helped Bradley to a 76-64 victory against Missouri for the program's first win against a Southeastern Conference foe and third consecutive home win against a team from a “Power Five” conference.
Young is the only player in the league this season with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals in a game after collecting 24 points, six boards, five assists and six steals to help highlight Saturday's victory. She hit two three-pointers in a game for the first time in her career and also tied a career-best with five assists. The first Bradley player since March 2011 with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and at least five steals in a game, Young is fourth in the MVC in scoring this season at 17.4 points per game and has averaged 23.8 points per game over the last four contests.
Schlueter helped key a first-half run Saturday against Mizzou, hitting a pair of three-pointers and dishing out a pair of assists to highlight a 16-0 spurt which gave the Braves a 34-19 advantage. She finished with 18 points to go with three assists, two blocks and one steal in 30 minutes of action, while connecting on 4-of-5 three-point attempts to help Bradley nail a season-best nine three-pointers. Second on the team in scoring at 9.3 points per game, Schlueter is the first Bradley freshman to start the first seven games of their career since 2008-09.
The honors marked the first time Bradley had both the MVC Player and Newcomer of the Week in the same week since December 2011.
The Braves continue an eight-game home stand Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game against Western Illinois at Renaissance Coliseum.
