Box Score PALO ALTO, Calif. – Despite notching just one hit off Cal Poly pitcher Sierra Hyland, Bradley had a pair of runners on base in the top of the seventh and the tying run at the plate before the Mustangs were able to close out a 3-0 victory over the Braves Sunday morning to wrap up the Stanford Nike Invitational.
Bradley's only hit in the game came in the top of the third on a bunt single by senior Mariah Cole (Springfield, Ill./Chatham Glenwood) to lead off the inning and Cole also reached base via a walk in the fifth. The Braves (2-8 overall) managed just three base runners in the first six frames and did not have a runner reach third in the contest.
Freshman Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) surrendered singles in both the first and second inning, but managed to carry a two-hit shutout into the sixth. Cal Poly (4-6 overall) finally got to Hull in the bottom of the sixth, however. Betsy Colburn followed up back-to-back singles to open the inning with a triple to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Hyland helped her own cause with a RBI single to plate Colburn and push Cal Poly's lead to 3-0.
The Braves tried to rally in the top of the seventh after senior Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) led off the inning with her team-leading ninth walk of the year. Sophomore Rachel Huggins (Mt. Zion, Ill./Mt. Zion) drew a two-out, pinch-hit base on balls to bring up the tying run. Hyland got out of the jam, getting the next batter to ground out to preserve the one-hit shutout.
Hull dropped to 1-4 on the year with the loss. She struck out three and walked two in the setback. Hyland struck out six in the circle for Cal Poly and improved to 1-2 on the season with the victory.
Bradley returns to action next weekend, opening play at the Hilltopper Spring Fling in Bowling Green, Ky., Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against Belmont.
