Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) collected three of Bradley's seven hits and drove in all three of the Braves runs in a 5-3 loss to Penn State at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday afternoon.
Chandler was a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, double, three RBI, one run and a stolen base to highlight Bradley's first meeting with Penn State (2-1 overall). The Nittany Lions drew six walks and roughed up Bradley (0-4 overall) pitchers for 10 hits as Penn State left a total of 12 runners on base, including six in scoring position in the 5-3 victory.
Penn State scored two runs on just one hit in the bottom of the first after loading the bases with a single, walk and hit batter. Kasie Hatfield drew a bases loaded walk and Macy Jones drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give PSU an early 2-0 lead.
After the Braves were unable to score in the top of the second after loading the bases, Penn State added another two runs in the bottom half of the frame. A pair of singles and a two-out walk loaded the bases for Karlie Habitz, who gave the Nittany Lions a 4-0 lead with a two-run single to center.
Chandler belted a homer to right field to lead off the top of the fourth and push her career home run total to 11. Penn State answered in the bottom half of the inning, however, taking a 5-1 lead on a RBI single off the bat of Habitz.
In the top of the fifth, Chandler added two more RBI to her day with a two-out, two-run double to center. She plated senior Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley) and sophomore Kendall Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) with her second extra-base hit of the contest to trim the Penn State advantage to 5-3.
Chandler's double was the last hit of the day for the Braves, however, as Marissa Diescher retired Bradley in order in the sixth and pitched around a Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon/Lake Land C.C.) walk in the seventh to close out the victory.
In addition to Chandler's 3-for-3 afternoon at the plate, senior Brianne Joseph (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls) also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 outing. Freshman Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) took the loss in the circle for the Braves to fall to 0-2 on the year.
Marlaina Laubauch was credited with the victory, giving up five hits and striking out five. Diescher earned her first save of the year for Penn State.
Bradley closes out play at the Kajikawa Classic Sunday against 2013 NCAA Tournament participant San Jose State at 11 a.m. (CST).
