Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Sophomore Rachel Huggins (Mt. Zion, Ill./Mt. Zion) capped a six-run fifth inning for Bradley with a pinch-hit, two-run double and sophomore pitcher Amanda Barna (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) earned her first career victory in the circle to help the Braves to an 8-2 win over 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Mississippi Valley State Saturday morning.
Bradley (8-12 overall) took advantage of back-to-back walks in the bottom of the second to push a run across and take a 1-0 lead, but Mississippi Valley State (2-14 overall) tied things up with a RBI single by Annaisa Sanchez in the top of the third to pull even at 1-1.
Senior Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) gave the Braves a 2-1 advantage with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth, earning the first of two walks in the contest. The Delta Devilettes answered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth, however. Deja Talton had a one-out single and was at second after a wild pitch for Courtenay Brooks who tied the game at 2-2 with a RBI single to right to plate Talton.
A six-run inning for the Braves in the bottom of the fifth was the difference as Bradley topped Mississippi Valley State 8-2. A pair of walks sandwiched around a single loaded the bases to open the fifth for BU and sophomore Kathryn Spenn (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville) drove in the go-ahead run with a single to right.
Junior Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) drew her second walk of the game to drive in another run and Chandler had her second base on balls with the bases loaded to give Bradley a 5-2 lead. Another run came in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Senior Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley) and Huggins capped the six-run inning with a pinch-hit, two-run double to plate Clemente and Lynch-Crumrine.
Freshman Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) relieved Barna in the top of the sixth and held Mississippi Valley State to just one hit in the final two frames to close out the win.
Barna struck out a career-high four batters and gave up five hits in five innings to earn her first career win. Hull had two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Bradley drew eight walks and left just four runners on base in the victory.
The Braves continue play at the Razorback Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. game against tournament-host Arkansas.
