MACOMB, Ill. -- Sophomore Alex Shane (Morton, Ill./Morton/Illinois Central College) shot a 72 and was one of three Bradley men's golfers to shoot 74 or better Tuesday as he helped the Braves claim the team title at the 42nd annual Beu Mussatto Invitational.
Bradley, which entered the day with a four-shot lead on the field, turned in the second-lowest round of the day with a 304 to finish six shots ahead of second-place finisher South Dakota. The team title was the second of the 2013-14 season for the Braves, who have won two tournaments in the same season for the first time since 1995-96.
Shane carded the low round of the day for Bradley, wrapping up tournament play at the par-72 Harry Mussatto Golf Course with a 72 to tie for third at 224. He finished five shots back of individual medalist David Kennan (219) of Chicago State and just one shot behind second-place finisher Samuel Matthew (223) of South Dakota to earn the first top-10 finish of his collegiate career.
Junior Danny Masrin (Palatine, Ill./Jakarta International School) fired his lowest round of the spring with a one-over par 73 and finished one shot back of Shane in a tie with senior Kyle Gunther (Dunlap, Ill./Peoria Christian) for fifth at 225. Gunther followed up his second-round 72 with a 74 to match Masrin for fifth at 225 and earn his first top-10 finish of the year.
Junior Seth Trolia (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour) tied for 44th in the field at 242, finishing out play with a third-round 85. Senior Daniel Young (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) also shot an 85 on the final day and was two shots behind Trolia in a tie for 54th (246).
Bradley's 54-hole score of 913 was six shots better than second-place South Dakota (929) and the Braves owned an eight-shot edge on South Dakota State and IUPUI, which tied for third at 921. Valparaiso was fifth in the team standings at 925 and North Dakota State was 22 shots off the pace in sixth at 935.
Indian Hills Community College took seventh in the field with a score of 936, while tournament-host Western Illinois was eighth overall 938. Chicago State followed in ninth (946) and Western Illinois-Gold completed the top 10 at 955. Wisconsin-Green Bay finished 11th (963) with St. Ambrose (12th - 993) and St. Francis (13th - 996) completing the field, respectively.
Bradley returns to the course Saturday and Sunday, hosting the Bradley Invitational at WeaverRidge Golf Club. Both days will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
