SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Sophomore Danielle Lemek (Doniphan, Neb./ Doniphan-Trumbull) is tied for the individual lead after firing a three-under 69 and the Bradley women's golf team is atop the team standings after shooting a school record on the opening day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
The Braves shot a school record five-over 293 Sunday at the par-72 Panther Creek Country Club and have a three-shot lead on second-place Indiana State, which also carded a school record low round at 296. Bradley's 293 topped the previous school record low round of 294 originally set at the Illini Spring Classic in Urbana, Ill., on April 10, 2004 and matched earlier this season at the Redbird Invitational back in September.
Wichita State and Illinois State finished the day tied for third at 297, with Southern Illinois following in fifth at 300 to round out the top half of the team standings. Evansville, Drake and Missouri State closed the day tied for sixth overall at 305. Northern Iowa will start Monday's second round in ninth (307) and Loyola is 10th overall at 311.
Lemek's opening round three-under 69 is tied for the individual lead with Indiana State's McCall Christopher matching her as two players shot below 70 at the same MVC Championship for the first time in league history. Sarah Boss of Northern Iowa is third overall at 70, while three other players shot 72 to finish the day tied for fourth.
Sophomore Allison Walsh (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Mt. Prospect) tied a season-best with a one-over 73 to close the day in a tie for seventh. Fellow sophomore Jenna Roadley (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Sturgeon Heights) is also tied for seventh, matching her career-low round with a one-over 73.
Freshman Paige Jordan (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) carded a 78 and is tied for 32nd, while junior Katarina Mangieri (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) rounded out the team scoring for Bradley with a 79 and is tied for 38th in the field.
Monday's second round is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. with Bradley playing with Indiana State and pre-championship favorite Wichita State.
