FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Eric Delvo (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) broke the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase Friday night at the NCAA West Preliminary and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship.
Delvo finished sixth in his heat and 14th overall in the 48-person field with a school record time of 8:50.43. The top three in each of the three heats of the men's steeplechase in addition to the next top three times advance to the national semifinals, which are slated for June 12 at the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore.
Delvo's time was 48 one-hundredths of a second from the top 12 and a spot at the NCAA Championship as he broke the school record of 8:53.13 set by fellow junior Chase Coffey (Hanna City, Ill./Farmington) earlier this season.
Coffey joined Delvo in the field at the NCAA West Preliminary and clocked a 9:20.54, despite an injury, to finish 15th in his heat.
Junior Kristen Busch (Waterloo, Ill./Freeburg) will wrap up competition for Bradley at the NCAA West Preliminary Saturday night in the 5,000 meters at 8:45 p.m. in Fayetteville, Ark.
