OMAHA, Neb. - Bradley junior Danielle Lemek (Doniphan, Neb./Doniphan-Trumbull H.S.) added yet another state title to her growing collection Thursday by rallying for a 1-up victory against Julie Seevers to win the 2014 Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association Match Play Championship at Oak Hills Country Club.
The tournament's No. 2 seed, Lemek breezed through her first three matches Tuesday and Wednesday, but found herself down a hole after losing the 14th in Friday's championship match. Lemek pulled even by parring the par-3 15th hole, then birdied the par-5 17th to reclaim the 1-up lead she held through the 10th. Lemek secured the title by matching Seevers' par on the 18th.
Lemek began her tournament by blitzing a pair of Creighton players: a 7-and-6 win against No. 15 seed Annie Pearson in the opening round Tuesday, followed by a 9-and-7 effort against Bluejays junior and No. 7 seed Grace Yowell in Wednesday's quarterfinal. Lemek advanced to the championship match with a 5-and-3 win against Omaha senior Sophie Peters. Comparing her scores to par, Lemek was 1 under when both of her Wednesday quarterfinal and semifinal matches were halted.
Earlier this summer, Lemek defended her NWAGA stroke play title with an 11-shot win at West Wind Golf Club and she was a 5-shot winner at the NWAGA State Amateur Championship at Hidden Valley Golf Club.
Lemek's summer performance comes on the heels of a dominating college season in 2013-14. As a sophomore this past year, Lemek was the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and she secured the league's single-season stroke average record (73.61) by winning the 2014 MVC Women's Golf Championship individual title with a record-setting, 4-under-par 212. The Valley title was her fourth individual tournament championship of the season and she claimed MVC Golfer-of-the-Week honors seven times in 2013-14.
