Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Whitney Tinjum (Stacy, Minn./Chisago Lakes/Washington State) scored in double figures for the fourth time in as many games, finishing with 13 points, but Northern Iowa made 10 three-pointers en route to a 70-51 victory over the Bradley women's basketball team Friday at Renaissance Coliseum in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both squads.
Bradley led for nearly the first eight minutes of the contest, before UNI used a 9-0 run to take a 12-9 lead on an Erin Dohnalek three-pointer. Dohnalek later added another three during an 8-2 Panther spurt which extended the lead to 23-15 and she knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the opening period at the halftime buzzer to give her squad a 32-20 lead at the half.
The Braves pulled with eight points nearing the 14-minute mark of the second half on an Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany/Max-Weber-Schule) three-pointer and Tinjum layup to cut the UNI lead to 39-31.
Northern Iowa put the game out of reach with an 18-4 run over a five-minute stretch, however, which extended the Panthers' advantage with 59-37 with just under nine minutes left. UNI went on to top Bradley 70-51.
For the first time this season, Bradley had its entire roster in uniform. Tinjum, who was 7-for-9 from the line and finished with a team-high 13 points, became the sixth player in program history to score in double figures in their first four games as a Brave and was the first to do so since Western Illinois transfer Michelle Nason scored 10 or more points in her first eight games in 1993-94. She also had six rebounds in 28 minutes of action to pace Bradley.
Freshman Tamya Sims (Milwaukee, Wis./Oak Creek) collected 11 points to join Tinjum in double figures, while junior Sameia Kendall (Kansas City, Kan./Raytown/Johnson County C.C.) matched a season-high with nine points off the bench.
Ellie Herzberg was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Northern Iowa. Dohnalek, who made 4-of-5 three-pointers in the first half, finished with 16 points, two blocks and one steal to help power the Panthers to the victory.
Bradley will close out a school record eight-game home stand Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against Drake. Sunday is “We Back Pat” Day to help raise awareness for Alzheimer's
