Box Score PEORIA, IL - Jabari Danzy's running header in the 85th minute lifted visiting SIU Edwardsville to a 2-1 Missouri Valley Conference road victory at Bradley Saturday night at Shea Stadium.
Despite the loss, Bradley (4-1-0, 12 points) remains in the hunt for its fifth MVC regular-season title. The Braves dropped into a tie with SIUE (4-1-0, 12 points) atop the league standings, while Drake (3-1-1, 10 points) also remains alive in the title chase. Bradley will visit Drake in next Saturday's season finale, while the Cougars will host Loyola Chicago, which was eliminated from the title chase after playing Drake to a 1-1 draw Saturday night. Bradley will clinch at least a share of the title with a result at Drake and still can claim the championship outright with a win or tie, coupled with a SIUE loss to Loyola.
It appeared Bradley might go ahead and clinch a share Saturday night when junior Alex Garcia gave the Braves the early lead with a 12th minute strike. Following several head balls in the box to keep Bradley's scoring possession alive, Garcia cracked a side volley from the top of the 18 for his third goal of the year and a 1-0 Braves lead at 11:23.
The Cougars needed little time to net the equalizer, however. Cougars midfielder Paul Scheipeter deposited a shot from eight yards out at the far post after Brett Lane and TC Hull combined to generate the flank service from the left endline.
SIUE had a golden chance to take a 2-1 lead into halftime when the Cougars were granted a penalty kick with just 16.9 seconds left before the half, but Bradley keeper Logan Ketterer saved the PK with a dive to the left post to preserve the tie.
SIU Edwardsville built a 9-3 edge in shots in the second half, but Bradley had a chance to take the lead late in the half off a restart. Joe Morales served a free kick from midfield into the penalty area, where Clark Emerson made good contact with a header in traffic, only to see the ball miss the target to the left.
SIUE earned the deciding goal on the ensuing possession, benefitting from a Bradley handball near the left corner. Ivan Gutierrez served the free kick and Danzy made the run across the box for the game-winner at 84:47.
Before Bradley faces Drake for the Valley title next weekend, the Braves will close out the 2015 home schedule with a stiff challenge Tuesday night, by facing Western Michigan (8-3-4) in a 7 p.m. non-conference clash at Shea Stadium.
