Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Whitney Tinjum (Stacy, Minn./Chisago Lakes/Washington State) had 21 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of steals to help lead the Bradley women's basketball team to a season-opening 75-67 victory at Detroit Friday at Calihan Hall. The Braves opened the season with a road win for the first time since 2002-03.
Tinjum did the bulk of her damage in the first half, scoring 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and adding seven boards and one steal in the opening 20 minutes. Bradley (1-0 overall) held a 35-31 halftime lead following a Kat Yelle (Geneva, Ill./Geneva/Ohio) three-pointer with four second left before the break.
The Braves opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt to extend the advantage to double figures at 43-33 on a three-pointer by freshman Emily Eshoo (Naperville, Ill./Academy).
A Leti Lerma (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) layup to open the fourth quarter gave Bradley its largest lead of the contest at 58-46 with 9:36 to play. Detroit (0-1 overall) rallied however, outscoring the Braves 15-4 over the next six and a half minutes to pull within one at 62-61 with three minutes on the clock.
Freshman Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) started an 11-0 Bradley run which put the game out of reach with a three-point play and she found sophomore Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany/Max-Weber-Schule) for a layup after a Titan miss. Tinjum had a steal and made a pair of free throws to make it an eight-point lead and added two more free throws following another Detroit miss as Bradley took a 71-61 lead into the final minute of the contest.
Schlueter ripped down a defensive board and Yelle added two free throws to once again push the BU lead to 12 (73-61) with 53 seconds to play. The Braves went on to close out a 75-67 victory for the team's first season-opening road win since posting a 72-65 win at Butler to open the 2002-03 season.
Tinjum turned in her fourth career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as she made 6-of-13 from the field. Schlueter added 12 points and three steals, while Yelle tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal in her Bradley debut after transferring from Ohio. Bradley committed 15 turnovers and held Detroit to 38.3 percent shooting.
Rosanna Reynolds paced three Detroit players in double figures with 18 points in addition to collecting game highs of seven assists and three blocks. Haleigh Ristovski added 15 points and 13 boards, while Nicole Urbanick was also in double figures for the Titans with 13 points.
Bradley closes out a two-game road swing Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Bowling Green, which will be available on ESPN3.
