Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley forced 18 Oklahoma turnovers, but the 17th-ranked Sooners knocked down 12 three-pointers and limited the Braves to 23 percent shooting en route to a 79-46 OU victory Sunday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum to spoil Bradley's home opener.
Sophomore Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany, Max-Weber-Schule) and junior Whitney Tinjum (Stacy, Minn./Chisago Lakes/Washington State) led Bradley with 12 points each.
Both teams struggled in the opening quarter, with the squads combining for 15 turnovers. Oklahoma (3-1 overall) limited Bradley (1-2 overall) to 29 percent shooting in the opening 10 minutes of the contest and the Sooners led 14-9 after the first period.
Peyton Little and Gabbi Ortiz hit back-to-back three's to open the second quarter for Oklahoma as the lead quickly stretched to double digits at 20-9. The Sooners went on to make 6-of-10 three-pointers in the second quarter to open up a 34-21 lead halftime advantage, with Little and Ortiz making 5-of-6 three-pointers in the frame. Schlueter scored eight of her 12 points in the first half.
After committing 10 first-half turnovers, Bradley had just three turnovers in the third quarter. Kaylon Williams took over on the inside for Oklahoma, however, scoring 10 of her 14 points during the third. Schlueter opened the third quarter with a three-pointer for the Braves, but it was the only hoop for the Braves during the quarter until sophomore Tamya Sims (Milwaukee, Wis./Oak Creek) beat the final horn of the period for a layup.
Williams took over for Oklahoma after Schlueter's three-pointer to start the third, scoring 10 consecutive points. The Sooners made it a 13-0 run on a Derica Wyatt three-pointer as the lead stretched to 47-24 with just under four minutes left in the third. Oklahoma took a 57-34 lead into the final period.
Bradley was held without a field goal for almost five minutes to start the fourth quarter and Oklahoma held the Braves to just 3-of-10 shooting in the final period as the Sooners closed out the 79-46 road win.
Schlueter and Tinjum were the only Bradley players to reach double figures with 12 points each. Tinjum did the bulk of her damage at the free throw line, making 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, while Schlueter hit a pair of three-pointers and also had two steals. Sims added eight points, six boards, one block and one steal in 26 minutes of action.
Williams was one of seven Oklahoma players to score eight or more points, tying for game-high honors with 14 on 6-for-6 from the field. She also had seven rebounds and two blocks in 15 minutes. Ortiz hit four of the 12 Sooner three-pointers and tallied 14 points and six assists. Gileysa Penzo scored 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Oklahoma was the first ranked home opponent for Bradley since the 2000-01 season and the Sooners were the first non-conference team ranked in the national polls to visit Peoria since 1993-94. OU is currently ranked 17th in the Associated Press poll and tied for 24th in the USA Today Coaches poll.
Bradley continues a three-game home stand Tuesday with a special 11 a.m. game against Western Michigan at Renaissance Coliseum. The Braves will host approximately 1,000 area school children for the annual Kids Day game, with each student receiving a workbook with puzzles, games and word problems which focus on leading a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, character building and dealing with bullying.
