Box Score LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Bradley managed just one hit off Kansas starter Monique Wesley and the Jayhawks took advantage of two first-inning errors by the Braves to post an 8-0 victory Friday afternoon to open the Troy Cox Classic.
A Kansas (6-0 overall) error and a walk by freshman Erika Hansen (Fillmore, Calif./Moorpark) to leadoff the game gave Bradley (1-5 overall) runners at first and second with no outs in the top of the first. Wesley pitched out of the jam, however, as the Braves left a pair of runners on in the opening frame.
Kansas had runners at first and second with two outs in the bottom of the first, when Chanin Naudin ripped a two-run double to right center. The third Jayhawk walk of the inning put runners at first and second again for Shannon McGinley, who drove in Naudin from second with a double of her own. Two more runs came across on Bradley's second error of the inning as Kansas took an early 5-0 lead.
Maddie Stein made it a 6-0 Kansas lead with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second to plate Briana Evans, who led off the frame with an infield single.
Senior Brittany Burgess (Utica, Ill./St. Bede) led off the Bradley half of the third with a single and moved to second on a passed ball, but the Braves were unable to drive her home. The Burgess single was the lone hit of the game for Bradley and the Braves were unable to advance a runner past second base in the loss.
Naudin drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, her third and fourth of the game, with a two-run homer to left center as Kansas pushed its advantage to 8-0.
Wesley notched her third perfect inning of the game in the top of the fifth, retiring Bradley in order to close out the victory for the Jayhawks. She struck out seven and walked one as she improved to 2-0 on the year.
Senior Lexi Cremeens (Dix, Ill./Mount Vernon) evened her record at 1-1 on the season with the loss in the circle for the Braves.
Bradley continues play at the Troy Cox Classic Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game against Weber State.
